Koushik Dutta introduces his latest project ClockworkMod Recovery

One of the most legendary independent app developers in the Android ecosystem is Koushik Dutta – ClockworkMod, ROM Manager and Helium Backup are only a few of the apps he’s developed over the years. His latest project is an ADB server that you can run from your Chromebooks without having to sort through ADB versions and dependencies and without having to install another OS.

ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) is a replacement recovery option for Android devices, made by Koushik "Koush" Dutta. It is based on the Android 2.1 (Eclair) recovery image. Features include Nandroid backup, adb shell, advanced update.zip options (ignore asserts and signature checks), and file browser for choosing update.

The ROM Manager app may be used for installing CWM, overwriting the device's stock recovery. As with the stock recovery, CWM can apply software changes to the device. Unlike the stock recovery, CWM is able to entirely replace the device's primary Android operating system ("flashing a new ROM"), including with aftermarket replacements such as CyanogenMod. Once installed, CWM it is accessed by turning your phone off, then triggering the bootloader prompt by holding down some device-dependent button combination as it is turned on.

CWM is also known as clockwork and CW recovery.

ClockworkMod Recovery is an Android custom recovery image. Once installed, this recovery image replaces your Android device's stock recovery image. Using this recovery image, various system-level operations can be performed. For example, one can create and restore partition backups, root, install / repair / upgrade system software and/or custom ROMs, and use other developer tools.
ClockworkMod Recovery is free and open-source software, released under the terms of the Apache License 2.0 software license. The ClockworkMod Recovery source code is included in the CyanogenMod source code tree.
You might already be familiar with the ChromeADB client app in the Chrome Web Store, which allows you to control your connected devices from your Chrome browser, provided you have the Android SDK installed.

Koush’s ChromeADB Server app removes the need to have the SDK installed, which is especially useful if you’re using a Chromebook. For now, you’re limited to being able to control connected Nexus 5 devices, but Koush said he’ll have other devices working with it later. Update: According to Ben Schoon in Google+, it works with any Android device now. He’ll also post the app to the Chrome Web Store when it’s ready. For now, you’ll need to download the package from Koush’s Google+ post and follow the instructions provided.

Since ChromeADB Server is in its early stages of development, functionality is limited, and you’ll want to be patient for the initial generation of the RSA key on your Chromebook. If you’re testing this out on a PC with ADB already on it, you’ll want to kill the existing server and if you’re running Windows you’lll still need the appropriate drivers before you test Koush’s server.

Sony has gathered up loads of negative karma for the way they treated George Hotz (geohot). Hacker community world over hates Sony for making them feel so unwanted and insecure. Sony, on the other hand, is on a blatant hiring spree and has recently approached Android hacker Koushik Dutta.

Koush Dutta is a familiar name when it comes to Android. He has done extensive work, hacking the Android platform inside out and has flagship products like ROM Manager and Clockworkmod Recovery under his belt. This has made him a top favorite at many Android forums. However, the entire matter of Sony going ahead and asking him to join their company, and his resigning has made him a legend.

The incident took place a few days ago and has left enough time to fill up our mind-spaces with all sorts of speculations. Some are wondering if he would have made an addition to the anti-piracy army Sony is building (supposedly) while others are speculating that he would have been a valuable asset as a PS3 hacker.

However, we cannot overlook the fact that Koush is actually a mobile platform expert with development experience on Android, Windows Mobile and .NET. He has little interest in PS3, or so it seems from his profile information. Another PS3 hacker (on Reddit) claims to have been contact the same way. Seemingly, Sony is trying to get back some hacker-love by opening its doors to them. But, the damage has already been done irreversibly
